Kolkata: The tribal woman who has accused 12 villagers of gang rape at the order of the village headman as punishment for having a relationship with a man from a different community in West Bengal’s Birbhum district has been put under police protection.
According to sources, the
woman who was recuperating at the district hospital has been shifted to a
city hospital and her family also taken to a safe house as police fear
of them being attacked, as villagers have threatened them of dire
consequences if they testify in court.
As police try to stitch
together a case, they have formed a Special Investigation Team under the
district police who claim to have recovered a video recording from one
of the accused of the proceedings of the kangaroo court, that had
ordered the gang rape.
Though police refused to
comment on the findings of the video, sources inform that it could prove
to be a major proof of the crime, even if villagers deny of the same.
They have also traced the
lover of the woman who has been missing since the fateful night, in
neighbouring state of Jharkhand along with his brother, who reportedly
had paid a fine of Rs50,000 to the headman to secure his release.
“The police are doing
everything at the shortest possible time so that a charge sheet can be
filed at the court to secure justice against this horrific crime. Now
the security of the victim and her family members are critical since the
family members of the accused are trying to peruse them to withdraw the
police case,” Kunal Agarwal, police chief of the district said.
The district
judge also visited the victim and also the site of crime on Monday
following the Supreme Court’s suo Motu intervention in this case. He is
supposed to submit its report to the apex court by next week.
